Gazetted on the 11th August 2005, Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary spans over 26, 103 hectares of area. Within the sanctuary covers the majestic habitat types including limestone outcrops, riverine forests, mangrove forests and dryland forests. This wildlife sanctuary is a safe haven to a diverse concentration of wildlife, making it a key attraction in Borneo.

The Kinabatangan River is home to: 8 Hornbill species, over 200 Bird species, 10 Primate species, Borneo Pygmy Elephants (The smallest elephant in the world!) reptiles, amphibians, and many more.

With our homestays and backpackers which is known as Sukau Village View Stay situated along the Kinabatangan River, it opens up a wonderful opportunity to get involved with local activities and gain insight into our village lives. “People of the River”, or most of us in the village call Orang Sungai, is one of the indigenous ethnic of Sabah have their lives intricately laced with  offerings of the river and the forest for centuries.

    • While witnessing wildlife in their natural habitat provides a unique experience, getting a glimpse of the endemic wildlife along the river cruise such as Borneo Pygmy Elephants is sheer chance (as this herd of pygmies migrate regularly to search for feeding ground. Also, they are wild!) . Yet, if you are eager to tick off your checklist to see the relatively smallest elephant in the world while you are lodging here, it can be arranged upon request. Additional fees may be charged for this cruise trip*.

*We have five fixed routes in our river cruise. Additional charges (for fuel) may be charged if elephant sightings are further away from the routes.
